Kindergarden Chemistry

When the kids did a fire project in kindergarden, I reckoned that, as a chemically educated ex-scientist, I should actually contribute something. So I did a magician's show, demonstrating some fireworks chemistry.

Can Iron burn?

Educational objective: Particle size, oxygen supply and inflammability

Relation to fireworks: Sparklers

Observation:

  • Iron nail: not inflammable
  • Wire wool: a little inflammable
  • Iron powder: burns like hell

Educational objective: Being amazed about the bright white magnesium flame


Colourful Flames

Educational objective: Many salts contain metals and some metals induce flame colouration
